Helpers for The Amazing Neighbourhood Race Event

We are planning a fun event called The Amazing Neighbourhood Race which will be held on the 17th of October 2026 in Timaru. This event is designed to encourage neighbours to connect whilst giving back to the community in unique ways. Our aim is to have a fun, engaging, and inclusive day where teams compete to earn the title of “Supreme Street” which includes the coveted Golden Street Sign! Along with other fantastic prizes, each team will leave feeling proud knowing they have helped support our community through a few of our planned pitstops.

We are hoping to create an exciting event for our region which will hopefully be a much-anticipated event for years to come! By encouraging neighbours to form connections in a different way, we hope to establish genuine relationships between neighbours who know and look after each other. This will support our goal of reducing loneliness and isolation within our neighbourhoods as it encourages neighbours to support and cheer on each other during the event and long after.

On the day, we will have around 20 teams of 6-8 people completing a range of activities around Caroline Bay. We require some volunteers to help with general event management such as helping teams with clues, challenges, finding amenities e.g. toilets and water fountains, calculating scores, welcoming and registering teams, general set up and pack down of the event, and possibly assisting at a particular pitstop if required.

As a small token of our appreciation, we will run a BBQ for all volunteers before the event. We will provide Hi-Vis Safety Vests, Lanyards with Event Tags, and any other gear necessary for the volunteer role.

Requirements:

We are after a few volunteers to help with a range of tasks as below:

Volunteer Option 1 - Welcoming / Registering Teams - Req. 1-2 people
This involves just an hour of your time at a desk near the entrance. Your main task will be to check off teams against the registration list, ensure their team health and safety documents have been signed by all players, and give them their score card.

Volunteer Option 2 - Set Up / Pack Down - Req. 4-8 people
This role will require volunteers to be physically fit, have common sense, and be willing and able to help pitstop organisers to set up their area. This could include putting up gazebos, setting up the activities, carrying/lifting gear to specific sites, setting up tables and chairs.

Volunteer Option 3 - General Help - Req. 4-8 people
Volunteers will need to have a willingness to help and a friendly manner. Volunteers will be spread out across the pitstops in Caroline Bay ready to help teams with any questions, clues, challenges, finding amenities, and providing general support. Some volunteers may be stationed at a specific pitstop if the organiser needs an extra person to help. This may also include someone to help the Event Manager to tally up the scores at the end of the race before prizegiving.

Each volunteer will be required to complete a health and safety agreement on the day. If a particular volunteer role requires being around children, we will require you to undergo a Police Check provided and paid for by Neighbourhood Support NZ.

When applying, please reference which Volunteer Option you would like to apply for. You are more than welcome to apply for all three roles if you wish to be a superstar volunteer on the day!

Time commitment:

Volunteer Option 1 - Welcoming / Registering Teams - time commitment estimated 1-1.5 hours
Volunteer Option 2 - Set Up / Pack Down - time commitment estimated 2-4 hours, from 10am-12pm and/or 4pm-6pm
