In this role you will assist adult migrants or former refugees on their English learning journey. You will be teaching the English they need to participate, gain independence and resettle successfully in NZ. Lessons are usually held once per week for approximately 1 hour in the learner's home but alternative arrangements can be made if preferred.
You will receive approximately 16 hours of classroom-based training prior to being matched with a learner. This will ensure you can provide them with the language skills and confidence necessary to integrate and participate in Kiwi life and culture.
This course is NZQA-approved and English Language Partners NZ carries out moderation.
Training dates:
Date 8 – 24 October 2024, Tuesdays and Thursdays
Time 5.30pm – 8.30pm Where 3 Sophia Street, Timaru
Previous teaching experience is helpful, though not essential, as all the required skills are covered in the course. A home tutor does need to:
➢ Have spare time to give, ideally one hour per week
➢ Be able to travel to the learner’s home
➢ Be able to work independently
➢ Understand the difficulties of living in a new community. Demonstrate patience and flexibility
➢ Relate well to people from different cultures
➢ Speak and write English fluently
➢ Be committed to learning about how language is acquired
➢ Have a satisfactory police clearance
➢ Follow the guidelines as per the ELP Covid Health and Safety policy
Initial commitment of 16 hours of face-to-face training + readings then once match 1-2 hours per week
