Knit for Purpose

15 April 2024 | Articles

Join us again between 15 April and 8 June, to knit peggy squares or blankets! Volunteering Mid and South Canterbury in partnership with Volunteering Canterbury, and Timaru Library are once again launching "Knit For Pupose". This is a project to promote Microvolunteering.

Microvolunteering is bite-sized, on-demand, no commitment actions that benefit a worthy cause. This year, we once again invite you to get involved and knit squares or strips of squares for blankets or knit blankets, which will be donated to those in need in our community through local organisations.

This is a project for the young and young at heart, the knitting newbies and the seasoned pros. All blankets will be donated to those in need through our local community organisations.

How can you get involved?

• knit a 10x10cm peggy square – as many or as few as you like!
• Knit a whole peggy square blanket!
• Sew donated peggy squares together into blankets
• Donate wool for others to knit with - we welcome donations of double-knit wool and size 8 needles (4mm), which we will share with anyone who wants to take part but doesn't have the materials to get started.
• You may also join the Knit and Natters Timaru Charity Volunteers Group to knit at 10am – 12pm every Thursdays at Timaru Library
• Invite others to join
• Join us to finish knitting and sewing as many blankets as we can on 8th June at Timaru District Libraries

The Pattern:
Here is our simple garter stitch pattern to create a 10cm x 10cm square.

For those more advanced who wish to make multiple squares:
We would be really grateful if squares are sewn together before being dropped off to us.
To reduce sewing time at the end, we suggest knitting long strips of squares like a scarf. You could even change colours each 15cm, as you go!

Labelling:
We welcome all yarn types, but ask that you please indicate whether your knitting is wool, cotton, acrylic or a mix. This is to ensure blankets destined for newborns and neonates are 100% wool, to keep them cosy.

World Wide Knit in Public Day Celebration
And finally, to wrap things up, we invite you to join us on Saturday 8th June 2024, (10.30am-12:30pm) at Timaru Public Library for World Wide Knit in Public Day. We will come together to finish knitting and sewing as many blankets as we can! Check our Events page for all the details.

Drop Off Point:
Knitted squares or blankets can be dropped off to us at Community House Timaru, 27 Strathallan Street, Timaru (between 9am and 4pm), Monday to Friday.
